Etiquette Edit: Wedding Guest Dressing Mood Board

Weddings have always been a chance to dress up, but, lately, we have noticed a trend—couples are curating not just their own wedding looks but the entire aesthetic, right down to what guests wear. From carefully crafted fashion mood boards to requests for guests to match the wedding color palette, it’s an idea that feels undeniably stylish. But is it good etiquette?

We feel there’s something exciting about a wedding being thoughtfully coordinated and finding a way to bring guests into the vision — transforming them from attendees into an extension of the wedding's story. When guests embrace the theme, it elevates the experience for everyone.

But, of course, there’s a balance. The best approach? Make it fun, not forced. A mood board should feel like an inspiration rather than a strict rule—think "We'd love for you to be inspired by our wedding fashion mood board when choosing what to wear for our wedding" rather than “Only wear these three exact colors.” Guests should feel included, not obligated. If someone shows up in something outside the palette, it shouldn’t take away from the magic of the day.

At its best, a dress code can create a sense of importance, turning a group of loved ones into part of the wedding’s story. It’s not about control; it’s about inviting guests to share in the vision, to feel like an intentional part of something beautiful. When done right, it can feel less like a rule and more like a way to celebrate together - one stylish look at a time.

Would you love a wedding where guests follow a fashion mood board, or do you think it's over-the-top?
