Good Friends of the Lowcountry is a non-profit organization with the mission of helping women living in Charleston, SC and the Lowcountry who are going through a crisis situation, and there is nowhere financially for them to turn. It all begins with a single luncheon. Every year guests are welcome to attend an annual holiday luncheon, which is the primary fundraising activity. Good Friends of the Lowcountry utilizes the funds raised at this luncheon to offer one-time, limited monetary assistance to low-income families who are residents of Charleston, SC. Social workers and case managers from non-profit agencies in Charleston, SC work with families to make referrals for monetary assistance through Good Friends of the Lowcountry. These referrals are administered through the Distribution Coordinator and must meet certain guidelines. For example, there must be sufficient justification for the request and applicants must include other organizations where they have applied for funding and been denied. Good Friends also compares applicants’ household income to the Federal Poverty Tables as a guide in determining financial eligibility.
